CHAPTER 16

ALEX FELT THE relief wash over him as he pulled into the driveway. Checking his phone, he shook his head in disgust when he saw it was four o’clock in the morning. The neighborhood was quiet, his house dark.

He turned off the engine, but didn’t leave the truck. Letting out a yawn, he shut his eyes and leaned back in the seat.

“You haven’t said it yet,” Nate said next to him.

“What?”

“Case closed. You know everything isn’t right until you say that.”

“Oh, yeah. Case closed.”

“You sound so enthusiastic.”

“I sound so tired.”

“I, uh, have some bad news for you, too. I didn’t think about it until we were halfway home.”

“What’s that?”

“You didn’t record any of that.”

“Ah, man,” Alex said, clenching up. “Damn it!”

Nate wisely kept quiet. Alex checked his phone, although he knew what he’d see. There was the one voice-recorded note. That was all.

Cindy wanted more notes, more data, and for an excellent reason. To build the company up, enhance the reputation, grow their database.

“We really need to hire someone,” Alex complained.

“Hey. You’ve got me and Cindy. Kylie and Leese, part-time. What more do you need?”

“Well, two out of that list can’t carry a pencil.” Alex laughed at Nate, who jokingly held his hands over his heart at the insult. “Seriously, though, thanks for the help tonight.”

Nate was always helpful, but his arrival couldn’t have been more timely. Alex could talk to ghosts, and had played something of a counselor many times. But despite all his ghostly and demonic abilities, he was alive. Nate could offer something more, and spoke with the ghosts at the hospital in a way Alex could not.

“You got it, man. Anytime. You think everyone will turn out okay back there?”

Alex didn’t know. There was no way he could help Bobby overcome all the pain in his life, not over a few hours. Most of the ghosts moved on, except for one or two. That had to count for something.

“I hope so.”

“Hey, if not, go back again, get paid again.”

“I think I’ll take a day off,” Alex said, laughing. “What’s been going on with you? You and Kylie kiss and make up?”

“Yeah, we’re okay. I think.”

“You think?”

Nate turned serious, which caught Alex’s attention.

“She’s having … I’m not even sure what you’d call it. A mid-death crisis. And I get it. Completely. Everything’s great one moment. You’re laughing, enjoying the world, almost so much you forget you’re dead. And then, you remember.”

“Do you want me to talk with her?”

“No, that’s okay,” Nate said, smiling. “She can’t afford you a second time.”

Alex laughed at the thought. Kylie was his first official case with Demons, LLC.

“How about you?” Nate asked. “Will Cindy kill you for being so late?”

“No, but she’s already taunting me. Around midnight she sent a picture of what I’m not getting to see.”

“Oh, dude, I hear that. I can be real quiet, when I want to. And sometimes, when you’re looking at pics from Cindy, I’ll peek over your shoulder—”

“Nate. I would think real hard before finishing that sentence.
